Branding Beauty Night Society

On September 14, 2010 by wildfireeffect

Tonight I had a chance to speak to a packed house on a topic that I am passionate about, BRANDING and in doing so help an organization that truly inspires me – BEAUTY NIGHT SOCIETY.

[DISCLAIMER - I did get approval from the organizers of BNS]

Briefly described: Beauty Night Society:

This year will be the 10th anniversary of the Vancouver started organization that has found a simple way to inspire hope in hundreds of volunteers and offer a real start to  re- building the spirits  of people and youth in the news-worthy Vancouver Downtown East-side.  In the coming months you will hear about Beauty Nights’s 10 year anniversary efforts. I encourage you to goto http://beautynight.org and be inspired for yourself because…

IT IS THE SIMPLE THINGS THAT MAKE THE BIGGEST DIFFERENCE

Next time you think you have little to offer, offer your thoughts and yourself.

The compassionate women  mentioned in the video IS Caroline MacGillivray, National Executive Director and Founder. The number of volunteers that have given their time is in the 100s, the number of participants in the thousands.

The story behind the video: [disclaimer]

I am part of Beauty Night’s volunteer promotion committee and designed this speech to get a bit of market research on a re-branding campaign that is already underway.  I tried to stay away from details of names and numbers because out of pure nerves I was afraid to offer false info by mistake.  Yet I still quoted 100 s of school kids for the Knitting program (when I do not have an accurate count for this year).  Details of the History is similar if not exact, the real story is much better.  Caroline really is this the1st visionary.  The work of many volunteers, sponsors, donors and a dedicated Board have brought this inspiring story to life.  Its a perfect example of the power of many. (as a social media consultant- the story of community inspires me)

The suggestions that were difficult to hear in the video are as follows:

Take a moment to offer your suggestions in the comment section I PROMISE  every comment will be brought to the the Beauty Night Promotion Committee.

Suggestions from the speech:

What do you think of when you hear the words ” Beauty night”?

Facial mask, Makeup, makeup goop, spa, beauty, nightime, time with friends, girls.

What phrases or images tell the “2010 Beauty night story”?

Image of two women, one distraught possibly in a sling- telling the story of the interaction, ” everyone is beautiful”, “inspiring dignity”

A summary post on Branding will follow.

  • Stephanie,

Thank you so much for choosing Beauty Night Society and the topic of branding which has been a much discussed topic on our promotions committee. (I am so glad you are a part of the committee!)

It was interesting hearing what people’s first impressions were with Beauty Night based on the words and the current branding. What I found moving was after you described what Beauty Night does – builds confidence, changes lives – the words people used to describe the organization changed.

We get 97% of our information from what we see and 3% from what we hear. If the picture doesn’t match the words, we stop listening. (According to Margo Dalinghaus from Liberty Education who runs the amazing women’s weekend)

Thank you for asking the community for some concepts of what the words beauty night society means to them. And thank you so much for being part of the committee – Stephanie, you are an amazing woman. I so value your creativity, innovation, sincerity, intelligence and consideration. You are an incredible woman which companies will always get more than they bargain for when they work with you as you are incredibly passionate, solution driven and creative. I am so lucky to count you as my esteemed committee member and dear friend.

  • :) Thank you Stephanie. I think if more organizations follow mission based management http://www.missionbasedmanagement.com where the organization trains the volunteers and gives them opportunity to take the mission, the values and the picture of success and continue moving forward – I think there will be more inspired people who get great value from their volunteer experience.

  • Well said! Your talk on rebranding was bang-on, particularly in the case of Beauty Night. So glad you are part of the group!
